All writers, no matter how good or bad we decide they are, are manipulating the same system. A system which consists of arbitrary sets of symbols and arbitrary rules by which those symbols are supposed to be arranged. Since language, then, isn’t a universal Truth, and the use of it is not Right or Wrong, but merely in accordance with or not in accordance with the taste of its creators, the real power of language comes with a knowledge of its rules and the ability to manipulate them. If a writer manipulates language effectively, and is valued as “good”, then he or she has done nothing more than apply or deviate from the rules as they appeal to their promoters. Writing, then, is the successful attempt to conform to arbitrary standards. Just as language isn’t a universal Truth, there cannot be a universally Good piece of writing. What makes any piece of writing “good” is the subjective approval of its audience. So, “good” writers are made, not born.
